He tried his best to be perfect knowing he couldn’t.
He did everything in his power,
from writing letters,
making her watch the stars with him
to talking over the phone till sunrise,
He kept trying to be a someone for her
someone who cared for her,
someone who cheered her,
someone who encouraged her
and all she did, if she did anything at all,
was to make it harder for him
she severed every new thread he wove
she shut every door he knocked
she built walls, placing the bricks as gently as she could
What drove her away, she knew not
What drove him closer, he knew not
What would become of them, knew no one.
After repeated break ups,
each one, worse than the one before
he gave up, to defeat gave in
he quit trying to win her heart
he would never know if she'd a place for him
for all there was, now was silence
any connection was like a faint sketch
of what it all could be if it were to be
Was she aware of what she had done,
it would never be known
if it ever would, it'd be too late
to even regret, or shed tears
who told her not to care
who decided for her
